What’s it like to live in Porthleven?

Described as ‘one of the best places to live beside the seaside’ by the Sunday Times, Porthleven has gained plaudits from across the UK for being a true gem of Cornwall. The town offers an unrivalled selection of restaurants and pubs, with the famous Porthleven Food Festival being held in the town annually. This once sleepy fishing port has blossomed into one of the most sought-after locations in the county.

The History of Porthleven

Initially thought to be derived from the name “St. Elvan” who was a compatriot of the patron saint of a nearby village St. Breaca, Porthleven started with humble beginnings. Earliest records tell us that it was a little fishing village nestling in the shelter of a wooded valley of a tiny creek in Mount’s Bay. The town gained an unfortunate reputation in the 18th century as a hot spot for shipwrecks. This was due to southwesterly gales and the mountainous seas.

Fast forward to the present day, Porthleven has firmly established itself as a hotspot for food tourists. With its harbour still in use and fresh produce being brought in every day, trade is rife.
